Doctor Who Ep. #778: “Let’s Kill Hitler”

The real world’s been kind of depressing lately. Fortunately, after a painful twelve-week wait, Doctor Who is back on the air! And now that I’ve finally finished watching all of the episodes (okay, minus the 108 that I had to experience via reconstruction), I figure I might as well post my thoughts on new episodes here. Obviously, these will contain spoilers, so if you’re not up-to-date on Who, don’t follow me over the fold! But for the rest of you…

A Few More Superdelegates

From the District of Columbia: Betsy Werronen, Republican National Committeewoman, via reading her twitter. I’m not 100% confident about this one, but superdelegate endorsements are really not that important yet.

From Mississippi:

“I hope he does run,” said Henry Barbour, who said he would endorse Perry. “I’ve talked to a number of folks who were going to support Haley had he run, and a good percentage of them are very favorable to a Perry candidacy. .?.?. He’s got a great record in Texas, we align with him philosophically and he can win. It’s that simple.”

From Rhode Island:

Rhode Island Leaders Endorsing Mitt Romney:

State Representative and RNC National Committeeman Joseph Trillo

The score right now: Romney 5, Perry 1, Santorum 1, with 2415 delegates outstanding.

Scratch Pawlenty

I tend to view the Iowa straw poll as rather silly, but it’s usually good for causing a couple candidates to realize that they had no hope of winning the nomination. This year:

“We needed to get some lift to continue on and have a pathway forward,” Pawlenty said this morning in an exclusive interview on “This Week.” “That didn’t happen, so I’m announcing this morning on your show that I’m going to be ending my campaign for president.

Pawlenty’s one delegate will be returned to the “Unallocated” pool.

Oh Yeah, Superdelegates

I caught this in passing from a Politico article:

Maryland’s committeeman Louis Pope, who is chairing Romney’s campaign in the state, expressed confidence that Romney will eventually wind up with a plurality of support from members of the committee who endorse. He said his candidate is most electable, which he predicts will become more important as the primaries draw closer.

So put another delegate on the board for Romney. (At least, I think so. I need to get clarification from the Maryland GOP whether their RNC members are pledged to the statewide winner.)

The article also confirmed that George Schiavone of Vermont and Saul Anuzis of Michigan are undecided, but that’s consistent with our current listing.

Another Romney addition:

“It’s in his heart,” said Romney supporter Ron Kaufman, former political director in the George H.W. Bush (41) White House.

[...]

Kaufman, now a Massachusetts Republican National Committeeman, said the importance of the first-in-the-nation primary to the state has “actually increased” based on the results of the last several cycles.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there were a few other RNC members that have declared support for a specific candidate that have slipped through my searches. I’ll be doing a really thorough check in December, since the delegate count is mostly academic until people start voting, but if you’re aware of any RNC endorsements that aren’t listed, drop a comment or send me an e-mail.

A New Challenger Approaches: Rick Perry, the Texas Governor

This comes as no surprise to anybody that’s been paying attention for the last couple months, but this interview effectively made it official: Rick Perry, George W. Bush’s successor as Texas governor, is running. (The official official announcement will be this weekend.)

I see Perry as pushing Bachmann to the side, but it’s too early to say whether they’ll split the theocratic vote enough to allow Romney to slip through and win the nomination. As for Perry’s chances in the general election? I still think that it comes down to the state of the economy on Election Day. While none of the major Republican candidates seem that impressive to me, that won’t matter if enough people want to throw President Obama out of office. Right now, Obama’s still slightly favored for re-election, but we’ve got fifteen stimulus-free months to go.

In site news, I’m changing the main delegate table on the 2012 Republican Convention page to only include candidates that actually have support from delegates. Since many people don’t have oodles of horizontal space on their browsers, listing twelve candidates (plus “Unallocated”) was a bit ridiculous when only three of them have delegate support so far.

So the Budget Control Act of 2011 is now law. I don’t really have anything to say about it that hasn’t been said on numerous other websites. But we can all rest now that the hard work of deficit reduction (READ: spending cuts) has been delegated to a “Super Congress”. (Deficit Reduction League of America? The Debt Avengers?) Should be fun to see who ends up on that committee.

Meanwhile, the FAA partial shutdown continues—and it’s going to keep continuing, as Congress has left town for the month. Awesome.

The next crisis will occur in two months, when the current fiscal year expires. I’m looking forward to seeing even more bills rammed through at the last minute without proper committee review, public comment, or anybody actually getting to read them before the vote.

The one good thing to come out of this mess:

Text is here. Section 101 doesn’t display because of a CSS error, but the spending levels are the same as in the Boehner bill.

I’m too tired and frustrated with the political process right now to say anything more right now. Maybe tomorrow.
